SAVE Supports Campaign to Return Plemont to Nature

Save Jersey's Heritage is throwing its weight behind the campaign to save the headland at Plemont and return it nature. Following through on one of its constitutional aims to protect Jersey's outstanding landscapes, SJH has sponsored a full-page advert in the Jersey Evening Post designed to mobilise Islanders. The brainchild of former Senator, and president of the Planning & Environment Committee, Nigel Queree, the campaign has been taken up by the National Trust for Jersey and the Coastline Campaign. The idea is to encourage Islanders to donate at least £10 in the hope of raising sufficient funds to buy the former Plemont Holiday Camp from its owner. The target is £5 million. In the advert SJH Chairman, Advocate Christopher Scholefield, says: "It has fallen to us to right this wrong and keep the cliffs forever free from intrusive development. It is a chance to be seized without hesitation."

THE SCOURGE OF uPVC WINDOWS

Anyone making a study of the historic built environment of the island and of St Helier in particular will notice that the insidious spread of uPVC window-framing throughout some quarters is gathering pace. Despite the fact that the use of uPVC plastics has been discouraged for many years in the UK and other countries, its use in Jersey seems to be a strong as ever.

Not only are plastic window frames a visual blight on the historical built  landscape of our island, there are many practical reasons why they should never even be considered. The environmental benefits of uPVC have long been championed by the people that sell it; this article explains why this is just not so.

MONITORING OF ST. HELIER PLANNING APPLICATIONS BEGINS

We are usually only aware of a successful planning application on a building or street when it's time for the builders to move in. In this instance it is nearly always to late to make a complaint.

The map on the left displays all the current planning applications on historic or important buildings in St Helier. A historic or important building in this instance, is any building to have been labelled a Building of Local Interest (BLI) or a Site of Special Interest (SSI). This usually means that planning applications are considered more seriously; however, unsympathetic alterations can and do take place.

The map on the left is therefore an easy tool for members of the public to become aware of a potentially damaging building application near them.

Information is correct for the beginning of January. Markers are correct to street level only. Watch this space for further updates...

Celebrating the work of Huw Thomas Architects in Jersey

The efforts of Huw Thomas Architects in Jersey have been far reaching in terms of the preservation of our built heritage. Also they have been instrumental in terms of helping to spread awareness that there are modern solutions to urban building that can be sympathetic to this heritage. The restoration of portions of Hue Street, carried out by Huw Thomas Architects, have long been a cause for celebration in St Helier. At the time of the restoration a set of sketches were made of some of Jersey's best heritage sites. These sketches also show the full potential of these sites to modern, sympathetic restoration and should be celebrated accordingly. They can be viewed here.
